New Harmonies: Celebrating American roots music

News the Smithsonian Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music exhibition tells the development of the music of America. American history is revealed through our music, who came from a variety of cultural and ethnic heritage. Rhythms, harmonies and melodies are mixed to form new sounds. It took expression in many types of folk music, gospel, blues, country western, zydeco, and bluegrass. The variety of instruments used include the guitar, violin, banjo, dulcimer, accordion, harmonica and drums.

The new Harmonies exhibit is part of the Museum of the Smithsonian on the Main Street series. It is one of a kind cultural projects that serve the residents of small towns in America and rural areas. The events provide opportunities for small museums, who would not otherwise funding and resources to attract these types of exhibitions. They allow also the Smithsonian Institution to share their collections with people who would not otherwise available. Photographs, recordings, lyrics and artist profiles are included in the exhibition. There will be many events companion in seven weeks, such as concerts, workshops and conferences. Events are free, although some require pre-registration. There will be a series of lunch and learn featuring various musical artists that will highlight their particular kind of music. There will be workshops where participants can create a native American flute music instruments or a banjo, one string. Some of these workshops will be sponsored by the local Cherokee Alliance County Visual Arts (CAVA). Concerts featuring vocal and instrumental. Concerts will be held in the auditorium at limestone College and some will be outside the Michael Gaffney cabin. A full schedule of events Gaffney is available at the visitor center.
